An Historic Home, Lovingly Renewed

Some places seem to wait patiently for the right moment to come alive again.

The Nest at Grey Farms is one of those places.

Thanks to a local family’s vision and care, this 1890’s farmhouse has been restored to its original floor plan and placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The wraparound porch, the soaring ceilings, and the original floor to ceiling windows whisper stories of generations past — now reimagined for today’s celebrations and retreats.

Built in the late 1800s, this farmhouse has stood for generations, quietly witnessing the rhythms of rural life — mornings warmed by sunlight through tall windows, evenings spent on the porch, conversations carried by the breeze. Like many historic homes, it has known seasons of activity and seasons of stillness. But its bones remained strong, and its story was never finished.

When we first encountered the home, we didn’t see a renovation project. We saw a promise. A promise to restore one of the few historic structures left neglected in the relatively new City of Central, preserve it for future generations, and share it with a community that cares.

It wasn’t an easy process. Grey Engineering managed the project and initiated foundation repairs immediately, installed a period specific standing seam metal roof, and replaced the structural interior wall that was demolished in attempts to “modernize” the home with an open floor plan. The project was full of surprises, many of them costly.
